Al igual que el principio de “momento decisivo” del fotógrafo de calle Henri Cartier-Bresson, Karsh creía que había un momento en particular, durante la sesión de retrato cuando el sujeto revelaría una parte oculta de sí mismo. Según él, “Hay un breve momento en que todo lo que hay en la mente y el alma de un hombre y el espíritu se refleja a través de sus ojos, sus manos, su actitud. Este es el momento a registrar.”
Esta filosofía, junto a sus maneras encantadoras y sinceras con sus sujetos, así como su habilidad sin igual con sus luces y equipo de cámara significaba que cada retrato que tomase duraría para siempre, por la mejor de las razones. No es de extrañar entonces que las personalidaes más famosas le eligieran cuando se trataba de retratos formales. Como un periodista dijo: “cuando los famosos comienzan a pensar en la inmortalidad, llaman a Karsh de Ottawa.”

Similar to street photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson’s “decisive moment” principle, Karsh believed that there was a particular moment during the portraiture session when the subject would reveal a hidden part of his or her self. According to him, “There is a brief moment when all there is in a man’s mind and soul and spirit is reflected through his eyes, his hands, his attitude. This is the moment to record.”
This philosophy, along with his charming and sincere way with his subjects as well as his unmatched skill with his lights and camera equipment meant that each portrait he took would last forever, for the best of reasons. It’s no wonder then that the most famous of personalities chose him when it came to formal portraits. As one journalist put it: “when the famous start thinking of immortality, they call for Karsh of Ottawa.”
