En el mundo actual de locura Instagram, puede ser difícil encontrar una fotografía que hace uso de los colores de una manera única, y sin embargo familiar. El artista y fotógrafo Hiroshi Sugimoto no parece tener problema con la fotografía en color, casando la simplicidad y la belleza en su obra “El color de la sombra”.
Esta vez Hiroshi Sugimoto gira su lente hacia la luz del sol, capturando los diferentes colores producidos por los diferentes ángulos de la luz solar.
Sorprendentemente, esta es la primera incursión de Sugimoto en la fotografía a color, después de haber trabajado casi exclusivamente con imágenes en blanco y negro. Sus imágenes, sin embargo, no revelan ningún indicio de falta de familiaridad, buscando su lugar en la obra de un maestro experimentado.
Con el fin de capturar las pinturas de luz, Sugimoto coloca un prisma de cristal en el centro de la habitación. La luz del sol se filtra en la pieza de vidrio, separando la “sombra” del Sol como si fuera diferentes espectros de luz, y pintando una pared blanca con color. A continuación el fotógrafo utiliza una cámara Polaroid para capturar las “sombras de color” resultantes.
Este proyecto es en realidad una colaboración con la casa de moda Hermès, que utilizará los diferentes patrones de color para sus pañuelos de seda de edición limitada.
La comercialización de obras de arte del fotógrafo no debería distraer la atención de su valor, sin embargo, como la pintura de luz es similar a las obras maestras pintadas de Mark Rothko, sólo en el caso del Sugimoto, es la naturaleza la que proporciona la luz y los colores, todo lo que el fotógrafo está haciendo es ajustar las variables un poco para captar las propias pinturas de luz del sol.

In today’s world of Instagram madness, it can be hard to find a photograph that makes use of color in a unique, yet familiar way. Artist and photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto doesn’t seem to have a problem with color photography, marrying both simplicity and beauty in his work, “Color of Shadow”.
This time Hiroshi Sugimoto turns his lens towards the light of the Sun, capturing the different colors produced by the different angles of sunlight.
Surprisingly, this is Sugimoto’s first foray into color photography, having worked almost exclusively with black-and-white images. His pictures, however, don’t betray any hint of unfamiliarity, looking instead like the works of a seasoned master.
In order to capture the light paintings, Sugimoto placed a crystal prism in the center of the room. Sunlight is then filtered into the glass piece, splitting the Sun’s “shadow” as it were into different spectrums of light, and painting a blank wall with color. The photographer then used a Polaroid camera to capture the resulting “color shadows”.
This project is actually a collaboration with the fashion house Hermès which will use the different color patterns for its limited edition silk scarves.
The commercialization of the photographer’s artworks shouldn’t distract from its value however as the light painting are akin to the painted masterpieces of Mark Rothko, only in Sugimoto’s case, it’s nature that provides the light and colors; all the photographer is doing is adjusting the variables a bit to capture the Sun’s own light paintings.
