Tom no tenía idea de cuánto tiempo había estado sentado allí. No importaba. Ella nunca llamaría. Sin embargo, en el fondo, él seguía creyendo en su poder sobre ella. // Tom had no idea how long he had been sitting there. It did not matter. She would never call. Yet, deep inside, he still believed in his power over her.

Siempre estaba decepcionado. // His room was filled with a terrible melancholy without her. When he would return, he hoped she would somehow be there. He was always disappointed.

Se preguntaba si ella había dejado que extraños la tocaran cuando estaban juntos. // He wondered if she would let a stranger touch her the way he had. He wondered if she had let strangers touch her when they were together.

Una tarde, saliendo de una tienda, la vio sin ser visto. Tom estaba paralizado y no podía moverse ni hablar. Más tarde se dio cuenta de que se sentía aliviado de que ella no lo hubiera visto. // Leaving a shop one afternoon, he saw her unobserved. Tom was paralyzed and could not move or speak. Later he realized that he was relieved that she had not seen him.

Soñó una noche que ella venía y le besaba, y con ese beso ella entraba en su cuerpo. Ella miraba a través de sus ojos y escuchaba por sus oídos. Por la mañana nada había cambiado. // He dreamt one night that she came and kissed him, and with that kiss she entered his body. She looked through his eyes and listened with his ears. In the morning nothing had changed.

Tom encontró un vestido de noche vieja de ella en el fondo de su armario. Le gustó colgarlo sobre su cabeza. Todavía olía a su cuerpo. // Tom found an old night gown of hers in the bottom of his closet. He liked to drape it over his head. It still smelled of her body.

Tom began to believe that he could will her call, that his need for her could make her call him.

De repente, él lo supo, en ese momento ella le estaba marcando. Era cierto. Su poder había hecho que ella llamase. Ahora sonaría el teléfono. // Suddenly, he knew, at that very moment she was dialing him. It was true. His power had made her call. Now the telephone would ring.

“Hola, no Tom ya no está aquí. Sé que se arrepentirá de haber perdido tu llamada.” // “Hello, no Tom isn’t here anymore. I know he’ll be sorry that he missed your call.”
