Acostumbrados al constante disparo de la artista, la cámara no resultaba una herramienta intimidante para sus amigos. El tercer ojo de Nan logró registrar con naturalidad los momentos más privados. Sus fotografías no resultan en una mirada intrusa, sino en una extraña familiaridad. Son fotografías que tienen un valor para quienes forman parte de ellas, son personales e inmediatas.
Las herramientas no son más que extensiones del cuerpo. Con el fin de facilitarnos la elaboración de tareas, cambiamos de una en otra en armonía natural. Las personas requieren diferentes herramientas que varían de acuerdo a sus necesidades: los matemáticos necesitan una calculadora, los artistas pinceles y los bomberos mangueras. Para Nan Goldin, tener una cámara cerca resulta en la satisfacción de su mayor necesidad.
“La gente que aparece en mis fotos dice que estar con mi cámara es como estar conmigo. Es como si mi mano fuera una cámara. En la medida de lo posible, no quiero que haya ningún mecanismo entre el momento de fotografiar y yo. La cámara es parte de mi vida cotidiana, como hablar, comer o tener sexo. Para mí, el instante de fotografiar, en vez de crear distancia, es un momento de claridad y de conexión emocional. Existe la idea popular de que el fotógrafo es por naturaleza un voyeur, el último invitado a la fiesta. Pero yo no soy una colada; esta es mi fiesta. Esta es mi familia, mi historia”.

Accustomed to the constant shooting of the artist, the camera was not an intimidating tool for her friends. The third eye naturally Nan managed to record the private moments. Her photographs are not an outsider looking in, but in a strange familiarity. They are pictures that have value for those who are part of them, they are personal and immediate.
Tools are merely extensions of the body. To facilitate our processing tasks, we change from one to another in natural harmony. People require different tools that vary according to their needs: mathematicians need a calculator, artists need brushes, and firemen need hoses. “The people who appear in my photos says being with my camera it’s like being me. It’s as if my hand was a camera. As far as possible, I do not want there to be no mechanism between the time of photographing and me. The camera is part of my daily life, such as talking, eating or having sex. For me, the moment of photographing, instead of creating distance, is a moment of clarity and emotional connection. There is a popular notion that the photographer is by nature a voyeur, the last guest to the party. But I’m not an infiltrated; this is my party. This is my family, my story.”
